BIOGRAPHY

Brain Death was a band formed in 1987 in the district of Inocoop in Guarulhos city Brazil. It started with the name Golgota and the songs were in Portuguese. They had a difficult start because the lack of equipment, place for rehearsals and the constant change of band members. The band was formed by Pedro Andrade guitar, Marcelo Monteiro-guitar, Feroba - drums, Caveman-vocal and Alex Nova bass guitar. They play for the first time in a music festival in the city of Arujá in 1987. One month later Caveman leaves the band. and they play in a music festival at the theater São Joaquim in São Paulo with Alex Nova in the vocals and Pedro in the contrabass. After that presentation Alex leaves the band. In the meantime the band continued with other members on bass and vocals. In 1988 Alex Nova returns as bassist and vocalist. In 1989 the name is changed to Brain Death and the lyrics are in English now. The inspiration were sci fi books, movies, comics and politics. The lyrics talk about politics, wars, drugs, life, death, ecology and a little bit of occultism. The line up was Jaburu-drums, Pedro Andrade-guitar, Alex Nova vocal, Marcelo Monteiro-guitar. The songs also got faster and heavier. At the same time Pedro started playing in parallel with a hard rock band called Blackout. In 1991 they played in many concerts in São Paulo. Jaburu (drummer) and Marcelo (guitar) leave the band. In 1992 the drummer Humberto Zambrini and the guitarist André Morais join the band and on February 2nd Brain Death records their first demo tape entitled The Beginning and it gets a great review in Rock Brigade magazine of June 1992. On 18th of July 1992 they play with the band Violent Hate and Lírio Negro and Pedro leaves the band. They find a new guitarist, Leandro Novo and participate at Fúria Metal, a heavy metal program hosted by Gastão Moreira on MTV Brazil. On July 5th, 1992 they are invited to participate of Comando Metal, a famous radio program on radio 89 FM presented by Walcir from the rock store Woodstock. Walcir interviews the members and plays their demo during the program. After a concert in july of 1992 Alex Nova and André Morais decide to end the band activities. Humberto and Leandro form the band Visible Factor. In 1995 Alex Nova, Pedro Andrade and Andre Morais reunite again and start playing new compositions. This time with the drummer Patrick Leung (Django's band, Scars, Red Sight, Genocídio). After personal problems André leaves the band and William "Vizinho" Cardoso (guitar) joins the band. On May 5th, 1996 they play at Aeroanta opening for Claustrophobia and Torture Squad. In May they also play at Skina 10 bar in Guarulhos opening again for Torture Squad. They play in many concerts but their biggest audience was in the 10th Rock City Festival of Radio Cultura FM 100.1 in the city of Assis where they opened for the bands No Choice and Zero Vision. On September 7th, 1996 they play with Visible Factor ( Humberto Zambrin´s new band - ex-Brain Death drummer). In the same month, Brain Death´s demo is played on several alternative radios in Sao Paulo. In August 1996 they record new songs in a live demo and in September 96 they are quoted in Rock Brigade 122. In 1997 William Cardoso leaves the band and Erik (Japa) temporarily enters as a guitarrist. At the end of 1997 Patrick leaves the band to join Scars. In 1998 Renato Luiz becomes Brain Death´s drummer. Now they are a trio and the lyrics and songs are more Hard Core and 80s punk metal oriented. They play at the 12th Rock City Festival in Assis for about six thousand people again with great success being quoted again in Rock Brigade Magazine 146 in September 1998. In their presentation the highlights were the covers of Garotos Podres "Anarquia Oi"(Anarchy Oi) sung in English and Só os mortos não reclamam (Only the dead don't complain) by Lobotomia. Critics defined the band´s songs as being a Crossover or retro-core. After this concert they keep rehearsing but they don´t play alive anymore and the band splits up in 2000.
